Week 37

When someone loses weight one of the most obvious things that changes in his/her life is shopping for new, smaller, cuter clothes. And how fun it is to have more options …and to actually enjoy trying on new outfits. This is a huge positive with losing weight. But there’s another everyday activity that changes when you lose weight (and want to keep it off) and no one ever talks about it. So I’m here to share all the dirt on …are you ready?

I’m talking about grocery shopping.  I apologize if you were expecting something more risqué.

Yes, it’s true, my peeps. Those ho-hum, run-to-the-store-for-some-milk outings take on a whole new life after you’ve lost 50 pounds*. I actually look forward to reading labels and finding low-calorie, low-fat options in the aisles now.  I always make up a list based on certain breakfast, lunches and dinners I have in mind, but I am also always open to inspiration from some ingredient I happen to find during my outing. (Sometimes it feels sorta like a treasure hunt.)  My favorite aisle these days would be the vegetable aisle. That's because most of them are free!! (Well, you do have to pay for them. I just mean they're free on the Jenny plan... don't anyone start stealing bags full of carrots and telling the cops "Sara Rue told me I could just take them!")  Food is not an enemy or an escape, or fuel to simply get me through to the next meal anymore – it’s an opportunity to stay connected to my goals and to make really good choices for myself. I tell people that I’m on “maintenance food” now, which I can choose (although sometimes I still choose Jenny cuz it’s yum) and I can prepare and shop for and be EXCITED about.  I love it when I cook up a healthy and delicious meal for myself and afterwards I can feel completely content and guilt free. So grocery shopping has become an “activity” instead of an errand.  I take my glasses so I can READ the labels, I make sure I allow plenty of time to shop instead of running in and out and I always eat before I go. So this transformation makes me just as happy – if not even happier – than the clothes shopping.

xo,
Sara
