Getting Started new 03/05/2010

Weeks 5 & 6

Hi Folks. February has been a great month so far. I've lost 2.6 lbs bringing my total weight loss to 15.4 lbs* and I've lost 2 inches off my waist and 3.5 off my chest. People, I'm not just losing weight, I'm losing my pants all together! Seriously, I've had to resort to wearing suspenders and tightening up my belt a few more notches to keep ‘em up.

I can actually pull my jeans off without unbuttoning or unzipping now. I found this out by accident in front of my manager, my consultant and a hand full of production crew right before my show in Vegas. Hey, no one can say I don't put on a great show! They all cheered for me and it was agreed among all that I need to shop for new pants and soon! The blatant truth is I won't even need to leave the comfort of my own home to find clothes, I've got an entire section of great clothing that I grew out of that has been taunting me. I win! — Those size 34 jeans are back baby! I might even start a retro trend with all the old clothes I'm soon to be styling.

So, my Jenny Craig consultant Kathy just came out to see me in Vegas. We sat down and planned ahead for my crazy schedule in Vegas while performing in "The Donny Clay Experience." I'm always up late and thus I'm starting my days later so I need to space out my meals accordingly. I generally wait to eat until after the show so that I'm not slowed down on stage with the whole digestion thing during my performance. Also, this way I have something to look forward to after the show! I really feel great up on stage — I'm lighter on my feet than ever.

Life in Vegas is fantastic. I've got a great set-up in my room. All I needed was a mini-fridge and a microwave but I went whole hog and got a place with a full kitchen. I'm going to be in town for weeks and possibly months and what I've learned is that if you don't feed yourself well, you will fail. So, it may be a tiny splurge but the benefits are gigantic and more than worthwhile. I get all my entrées shipped from Jenny Craig At Home and I actually enjoy shopping for fresh produce and conjuring up some fun salads and veggie dishes to volumize my entrées. I got the chance to impress Kathy with my gourmet cooking. I made a fabulous (and stupid-easy) stir-fry with yellow beets, onion and asparagus. She said I missed my true calling in life. I'm also mastering the ability to stay on track when I dine out. Like I said before, there are so many amazing restaurants in this town to eat at and I'm in complete control now with my choices and portion control. I use Jenny Craig's visual cues for serving size and I'm becoming a pro at gauging how much lean meat or fish I should eat by the size of my cell phone or even a deck of cards - two items easy to come by in this town.

Listen, I'll tell you this story: The other night I was faced with a very tough dilemma while dining out at a four star restaurant. It was the evening before my weigh-in and at the end of the meal, the chef sends out a tray to my table laden with the most mouthwatering desserts you could ever imagine. The banana cream pie and pecan pie were screaming out my name. It was hard to hear them over the cheesecake and ice cream but I managed. To say the least I was being tested beyond the pale. But I stopped in my tracks, and I weighed the over-whelming temptation of eating one of these fine desserts against my weight loss goal for my weigh-in first thing in the morning. I must have looked a bit strange to the rest of the table because I was literally sitting there frozen in thought. I remembered the Jenny Craig cheesecake I had had a few days earlier. I realized that I could experience the best of this amazing presentation by just thinking it through. Instead of diving in mindlessly and gorging myself, I had one bite of the banana cream pie and cheesecake and 2 bites of the pecan pie. They were incredible. I savored them. And then I passed the tray on to the other members of my party. I had a gorgeous mug of coffee with steamed vanilla milk and some Splenda® and I felt great.

The next morning I stepped up on that scale and weighed in at a full 2.6 lbs* lighter. I finally breached the 170's! The 170's!! I haven't weighed less than 180 pounds since Seinfeld was on the air. But I do now. Talk about having your cake and eating it, too. I sat, I ate (intelligently) and I conquered. And as I have said in the commercials, if I can do this — you can do this, too.
