After the birth of my third child, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Extreme weight gain, fatigue, depression, and heart palpitations were all side effects of my diagnosis. In just over 4 months, I gained over 100 pounds. To make matters worse, my blood pressure was sky-high and even though I was taking medication, it was still not under control. During one of my check-ups, my doctor informed me that there was no point in trying to lose weight as it is just too difficult for thyroid patients. I had tried my best on my own with little results. Giving up, I felt defeated and helpless as my weight reached an all-time high. We own working cattle farms and my weight affected my ability to work on our farm. I had no energy, so I would end up staying home after lunch because I physically couldn't do anymore. It was impossible for me to carry buckets of grain to feed the cattle because I would get so winded.
I knew that our eating habits as a family needed to change, starting with me. We used to have a huge breakfast and lunch, then work until 10 or 11 pm, and then have a huge supper because we were starving. When I say huge I mean huge. A typical day of meals for me was three pancakes with syrup and butter, 2-3 scrambled eggs, 8-10 sausage links, and hash browns smothered in cheese. Lunch would be 2 hamburgers and a large plate of fries covered in melted cheese, pasta salad, and cookies or cupcakes for dessert. A late night supper would be a whole large pizza and I would eat an entire bag of chips waiting for the pizza to heat up. We always had a large stock of junk food in the house for snacking.
I finally had my “Aha Moment”. One morning, I woke with my heart pounding hard and fast, and started to vomit and sweat profusely. I thought I was having a heart attack, but after a trip to the emergency room, it was diagnosed as a type of tachycardia. It made me think about my health and my weight and the unbearable thought of not being there for my husband and children if my life was cut short. I couldn’t stand the thought of never seeing my children graduate from high school, get married, or seeing my first grandchild. The very next day, as I was working on some invoicing for our business, an ad for Jenny Craig popped up on my screen. I didn't even hesitate. I called for a same day appointment and a few hours later, I was a new Jenny Craig client with my own personal weight loss consultant.
I knew Jenny Craig was going to work for me because of the ease and convenience of the program. I needed a program that was mapped out for me, as well as the accountability of the weekly weigh-ins and consultations with my consultant. Joining Jenny Craig was a total lifestyle change. I learned about nutrition, exercise, and that in fact, you can lose weight if you have a thyroid condition. My consultant helped me manage my stress eating and taught me about the many myths surrounding diet and exercise. I couldn't believe how much of the right foods I could eat and lose weight at the same time. My consultant also urged me to start moving as I lost weight. I started with walking and worked up to running, which I found that I really loved. Who knew!
I lost 110 lbs.* on Jenny Craig. My family has been so amazing through this whole journey. I wouldn't have been able to do this without them. One thing that melts my heart every time I think about it is that my son, Tyler would hug me every Monday morning (weigh-in day) and measure around me with his arms. Every week his arms got closer and closer together. He was so proud of me!
My life is so awesome now! I no longer have junk food in our home, and the whole family eats healthier and saves money too! I put in a garden for the first time in my life. I make my own salsa, pickles, chili sauce, and unsweetened applesauce which I use in my recipes instead of oil. My family now eats fruits and vegetables instead of chips and candy bars. My new passion is finding healthy recipes or coming up with ones of my own. Another benefit of losing weight was getting off my high blood pressure medicine, and I've have not had any more tachycardia attacks! I have run two half marathons and my husband has a new and improved employee with so much more energy and strength to do all the things I love to do. I refuse to use the 4-wheeler to check our cattle; I walk or run everywhere. I even run to our other farms about five miles away to get my workout in for the day. I also load (by hand) our customer’s 50 lb. bags of feed. It's a great workout!
In closing, one of the greatest things to happen during my weight loss journey is my outreach to others. I've helped several friends in our community and my family lose weight. It is the most rewarding feeling in the world! I was also chosen to share my weight loss story in a popular national magazine! To sum this whole experience up in one phrase, it would be that Jenny Craig helped me get my life back. I'm living again, healthier and happier!
