Let me start by saying that I never thought I would be writing a personal weight loss success story. My goal was to lose enough weight to feel comfortable in my skin, be able to walk up a flight of stairs without seizing up, and ultimately not have to shop in the oversized women's section anymore!
So what got me here? I have always blamed my health issues on my genetics. I was just following in my mom's and maternal grandmother's footsteps of being overweight, having high blood pressure, and being destined to develop diabetes. As a matter of fact, my father, brother, and sister all have high blood pressure; I had the added bonus of high cholesterol and a fitness level of about a negative 2. So, after a serious health scare (I was sure that I was having a heart attack), I got the news that my heart wasn't damaged, but I was morbidly obese. If I didn't do something about my diet and exercise, I would definitely end up in the hospital again. With the doctor's words echoing in my mind, something inside my brain finally snapped. I think if I looked back, I might be able to see that my stars were in alignment because that is the way I felt. I had topped the scales at 228 lbs. As a woman of short stature, I could be described as being as round as I am tall. I know it sounds like the cards were stacked against me, but I had resolve on my side! I had to do something. I tried other diets before, with minimal success, and always ended up heavier than I started. Most who have struggled with their weight their entire lives can definitely relate. I knew I needed to focus on a lifestyle change. Luckily one of my coworkers was on Jenny Craig. She had been successful and to be perfectly honest, every time she brought out one of the Jenny meals, I had a little food envy because it looked and smelled delicious. I decided that Jenny Craig was worth a try, and I made an appointment.
Once I started, I was amazed at how good the food tasted and how satisfied I was during the day. The guidance from my Jenny consultant, coupled with their literature, helped me reshape my thinking and my body at the same time. The success I was seeing each week continued to be a motivator for me. Soon I had lost enough weight to contemplate joining a gym. I had the losing part down but needed to move more. I actually made it one of my New Year's resolutions and bought my first pair of exercise shoes to seal the deal. I live about five blocks from a nice gym and for about two weeks I rode my bike past there hoping to get enough courage to join. Finally I did, and that was the beginning of the second phase of my transformation.
I started exercising and was astounded by the results. My body started to reshape and the scale continued to move in the right direction. More importantly, I was truly enjoying the workouts. I met with a trainer and we developed a workout plan that included some long- and short-term goals. I must tell you that I have never been an athletic person and I was certain that athletic would NEVER be a word that described me. Yet here I was working out and getting stronger and fitter each week. I signed up for a boot camp and was hooked. The cardio, strength training and variety were an incredible boost to my metabolism, and propelled me to become a more fit me. One of the boot camp instructors asked us to write down our goals, and one of mine was to run a mile without stopping. I have since accomplished that goal and competed in a 10K and earned third place in my age group!
I have lost a total of 86 lbs.* I have been successful because I plan ahead, pack my lunches, exercise and watch what I eat each day. The things that the Jenny program taught me during my weight loss are now embedded into my everyday life. I've actually seen positive changes in my family as well, and we talk about making healthier choices every day. I'm in control now, have made the necessary lifestyle changes to be healthy and fit, and couldn't be happier with my results!
