What Makes a Weight Loss Program Effective?
Looking to lose weight? There are several factors that go into what you might use to decide on a weight loss program. From cost and taste to convenience and results, you probably have a checklist in mind when doing your research about which program is right for you.
Obesity experts have their own criteria as to what makes a weight loss program effective. According to a recent study published in Obesity, researchers at Johns Hopkins evaluated whether weight loss programs reported on their website evidence of key essential criteria to demonstrate they reflect expert weight management guidelines.*
According to Lisa Talamini, Jenny Craig’s Senior Expert, Scientific Communications and Clinical Development, Jenny Craig meets the five essential criteria laid out by the researchers:
1. Offer a high intensity intervention (more than 14 sessions in 6 months)
Our personalized support is a key component of our program. You’re encouraged to meet with your consultant at least once a week for the duration of your weight loss journey. You’ll talk through challenges, create your weekly menu and get support every step of the way.
2. Recommend an evidence-based diet
The effectiveness of our program has been proven: our members lose 3x more weight than dieting on their own.‡
In a 2015 study in Annals of Internal Medicine, Jenny Craig's program was recognized as one of the most effective weight loss programs, suggesting that doctors consider recommending Jenny Craig’s weight loss solution to their patients who are seeking weight management.**
3. Encourage increased activity
Jenny Craig recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week (for example: 30 minutes, 5 times per week), plus muscle-strengthening activity (such as strength training with Curves) that involves all the major muscle groups 2 times per week.
4. Teach behavior strategies including self-monitoring
Our consultants work one-on-one with members to set goals and build weekly action plans utilizing lifestyle strategies for healthier eating and a more active lifestyle.
“Self-monitoring of food, activity and weight is an essential behavioral strategy, as it enables members to recognize their wins, identify challenge and make course corrections to stay on the path to success,” says Talamini.
5. Does not include non-FDA-approved supplements for weight loss
To ensure you receive the spectrum of nutrients you need while on a calorie-reduced menus, we encourage you to complement your menu with a daily multivitamin. Your weight loss comes from eating our delicious, nutritionally-balanced food, not a pill!
