Do you believe that your weight problems are a result of your own lack of willpower? Have you begun to transfer your negative feelings about weight to other areas of your life? Does it seem like the battle with your weight will never end?
If you answered yes to any of these questions you may be a weight pessimist. This weight loss mindset can develop through many failed attempts at losing weight and keeping it off.
You can begin to overcome your negative thoughts by practicing 3 simple behaviors:
Learn to be optimistic: We have an inner dialog going with ourselves 24 hours a day, whether you notice it or not. To encourage a positive attitude with your weight loss plan, take notice of what your inner dialog is saying. Are you constantly pointing out your failures and weaknesses? Learn how to disagree with yourself. Counteract negative self talk with affirmations. For example: Rather than saying to yourself: "My eating is out of control!" Say: "I am in control of my thoughts and actions." Before long, you will begin to believe the positive statement and your behavior will follow this belief.
Celebrate your success: It can be so easy to focus on what's going wrong, that you lose sight of what's gone right. Maybe you didn't get in the physical activity you planned for this week. But, you did eat at least 5 servings of vegetables and fruit every day! Why not focus on your new healthy habits and begin each day fresh? Treat yourself to a manicure for doing such a good job with your menu. Then, create a detailed and realistic plan for incorporating activity into your life next week.
Surround yourself with supporters: Surround yourself with people in your fitness community who support your lifestyle changes and your weight loss goal, whether that be close friends, family, co-workers. There is no room for naysayers in the life of a weight pessimist. Identify those who are trying to sabotage your weight loss and limit your contact with them, at least until you know you can neutralize their negativity with your new positive attitude.
