Simplify Your Life

Is your to-do list never ending? With errands, bills, work, and more work piling up on your list, it may seem impossible to make any headway. If you’re up to your neck in responsibilities, it may be time to simplify and refocus your attention on the things that matter the most.

If you’re committed to a weight loss program, it is important to make weight management a priority in your life. Doing so will help you find the time to prepare healthy meals, be consistently active and to practice healthy self-care. Simplifying your life may also help you reach your weight loss goals faster.

How to Master Simplicity

The secret to mastering simplicity is a 3-step process: scale down, delegate and eliminate! Here’s a checklist to help you find ways to simplify, so you can make room for a more balanced lifestyle.

Reduce weekend and late evening hours Reduce magazine subscriptions to just a few
Limit important tasks to five or fewer Limit TV time to just a few favorite shows
Check your email/voicemail only 3 times a day Share time with close friends versus acquaintances
Clear your desk of extras and add a single vase Reduce your Web surfing time by half
Limit professional activities Trade formal dinners for potlucks
Ask for help with part of a project from a peer Enlist housecleaning/other services
Delegate a project to a junior employee Combine workout time with family time
Archive emails you don’t access on a daily basis Prepare several days of your menu grocery additions in advance

Let Go of the Unimportant

How often do you get upset or worried over things that are out of your control? How often do you let these things throw off your day, leading you to mentally obsess or emotionally overeat? It is important to know the difference between things you can change and things you can’t change. This week, if you find yourself reacting to a particular event in an unhealthy way, practice adapting the STOP Technique to stay connected to your priorities.

Tell yourself to STOP, and say to yourself:

Stop! I have choices here.

Think: How am I reacting in this moment?

Overview: Just how important is this issue? Is it life-threatening? Is there something I can do about it? Is it beyond my control and not worth stressing over?

Pick! One small step I can take is... Or, this situation is beyond my control, and I can accept it and move on.

If you’re overwhelmed by your day-to-day responsibilities, simplifying your life could help you find success on your weight loss program. There are less hours in the day than responsibilities, so picking and choosing your battles may prove to be helpful. Put your health and wellness first by prioritizing your tasks and simplifying your life!
