How Portioned Foods Can Lead To Better Weight Loss

Understanding healthy food portions is an essential part of any weight loss system—and it’s one of the key foundations of the Jenny Craig program. A study published in Obesity magazine, confirms what our expert nutritionists have known for 30+ years: that pre-packaged, portioned foods can be a powerful ally in your weight loss journey.

Set portions = smart strategy
So-called “ready meals” haven’t always been associated with healthy eating; there are many companies producing frozen “convenience” entrees that are loaded with salt, sugar and unhealthy fats, and still others producing “super-sized” meals. But there ARE exceptions. The study which followed participants over a three-month period, found that adults who ate healthy pre-packaged, portion-controlled meals twice a day lost more weight than those who chose their own foods and portions.

More good news: the portion-controlled group also had lower cholesterol and fared better for other cardiovascular risk factors in the new study. Satiety—how satisfied participants felt after eating—was comparable between the groups, a finding that bodes well for long-term lifestyle changes.

Healthy habits in the making
These findings reflect those of our own independent two-year study, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2010. In this trial, researchers found that people eating Jenny Craig’s nutritionally balanced, portion-controlled meals lost 3X more weight that those dieting on their own. Participants lost 7–10% of their body weight, reduced their waist/hip circumference, lowered their risk of Type 2 diabetes and experienced improvements in a variety of measurements related to quality of life.
