Building a Support Network

Having support can make a big difference in successful lifestyle change. It’s important to build a network of people to surround you, people who can support the decisions you are making toward a healthier you. To get started:

1. Make a list of others who support your goals and who may have made positive personal changes for themselves:

  • Spouse or significant other
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Co-workers
  • Church or community groups
  • Counselors or consultants

2. Widen your support network if you find that you do not have enough people who can help you on your journey.

  • Make connections by expressing yourself and actively listening.
  • Try new networks or explore deeper relationships with your existing ones.
  • Be a champion for others so you can give and receive support in return.
  • Make a plan.
  • Ask for specific help.
  • Make a plan to contact someone in your support network weekly.

3. Record your experience.

  • Keep track of the support, advice or encouragement you are given.
  • Use the online journal on your dashboard to record the experience of expanding and using your support network.
