4 Ways to Beat the Winter Blahs

When winter first arrives it can feel like a truly magical time. But by the time February rolls around, the early sunsets, chilly temps and snow shoveling can leave us feeling downright sorry for ourselves. No matter what’s causing these gloomy moods, they can have a negative impact on our weight loss journey. Here are four tips for getting through winter with a sunny outlook.
1. Catch some rays
We know, we know—it’s COLD out there, and the days are short. It can be hard to find the time (or motivation) to get outside during the winter. But humans need exposure to sunlight—it triggers our bodies to produce more Vitamin D, which can have a positive effect on our moods. If you’re cooped up in the house or in an office all day long, try to get outside for at least 30 minutes. Take a walk, or visit a local café and sit by the window. It may also help to open the drapes or use “full spectrum” light bulbs that mimic sunlight.
2. Break a sweat
Cold weather can also make it difficult to stick to your exercise regimen. Sure, you know you should be working out, but it’s so warm in your living room, and your windshield is covered with ice, and…look, we get it. If you find that cold weather is a common barrier for you, try a workout you can do in your living room. There are thousands upon thousands of exercise DVDs out there, and most of them don’t require any special equipment. If you’re new to the in-home workout, ask around—chances are, your friends have lots of favorites to recommend.
3. Cook something good
Is there anything cozier than a warm kitchen? Winter is a wonderful time to experiment with healthy, Jenny Craig-approved recipes. Browse our online recipe library for hearty options like Maple Mustard Carrots, Garlic Roasted Vegetables , Apple and Brown Rice Pilaf, then make your shopping list and GO! For extra points, invite a friend over for a day of cooking and chatting. Most of the recipes make several servings, so you’ll have leftovers to share with your buddy—and enjoy throughout the coming week.
4. Create a winter “carrot”
You’ve already set your BIG Jenny Craig goal, and you’re steadily working your way there. But you should also be celebrating those little victories along the way! Try this trick: choose an upcoming milestone, like a certain number on the scale, a fitness goal or anything you like. Then start thinking of a reward. It might be day at the spa, a weekend girlfriend getaway, or even a stylish new winter coat. Whatever you choose, having something to look forward to can make those cold days feel a whole lot warmer.
