Cooper Institute Analysis Validates Effectiveness Of Jenny Craig Program

CARLSBAD, Calif., Nov. 30, 2004 - At the recent annual meeting for the Association for the Study of Obesity, Dr. Steven Blair, of The Cooper Institute, announced The Institute's evaluation of the effectiveness of the Jenny Craig weight management program. The report cites overall weight losses of 8%, 12% and 15%, based on 10, 26 and 52 weeks of active participation in the program. This data indicates that the Jenny Craig program's effectiveness meets or exceeds rates of weight loss achieved with intense behavioral or medical treatments.

The Cooper Institute is a leading research organization in the United States specializing in research on physical activity and health. The Cooper Institute researchers evaluated data from 60,410 clients who attended the Jenny Craig program from May 2001 through May 2002.

"Real-world observational studies, like this one, provide useful information about the types of programs that really work." said Carrie Finley, lead study investigator for The Cooper Institute, "As researchers, we welcome the opportunity to study the results of commercial programs, like Jenny Craig. It is important to evaluate science-based programs that garner real results, and rise above the fray of all the fad diets currently on the market."

In the first part of the study, researchers evaluated those clients who participated in the program for specific periods of time, but with minimal requirements for participation in weekly consultations. Two-thirds of participants remained in the program at eight weeks, and they lost an average of 7.9 pounds. About one-third of original participants remained in the program at six months, and these individuals had an average weight loss of 15.0 pounds. Participants who remained in the program at one year had an average of 22.0 pounds weight loss.

Importantly, 44% of the participants lost at least five percent of their body weight, a reduction which medical experts say provides significant health benefits, such as reduced risk for diabetes, heart disease and hypertension.

The cornerstone of the Jenny Craig program is weekly one-on-one consultations between clients and consultants, which provide clients educational support, menu planning, activity goals, motivation and accountability. In the second part of the analysis, The Cooper Institute investigators identified three specific groups of clients who attended at least 90% of their weekly consultations for a period of 10, 26 or 52 weeks. The rate of weight loss was greater in these groups who attended regularly; 8% of body weight (15 lbs.) at 10 weeks, 12% of body weight (26 lbs.) at six months and 15% of body weight (34 lbs.) at one year. These weight losses meet or exceed the 5-7% loss of body weight reported with intense behavior modification programs or the loss of body weight obtained with prescription weight loss medication over similar time periods.
