Full Version: Who shows you how to calculate exchanges?

I have been on halfway now for almost 2 weeks and my JCC had me get the dining out guide and sent me the Halfway Sucess guide etc. But I don't see anywhere how to calulate the exchanges on your own like the nutritionist does for us. I see other people doing it but where did they learn it? I wish JC would include this on the site for us to study and learn, it's not always easy to get on the computer and ask the nutritionist. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? I will also ask my JCC Monday but was hoping to find out before then.

Thanks in advance!

Edited to add: I mean acutally calculating it from the package, like figuring the calories, carbs, fat etc and turning those into the starches, meat, etc.

A lot of the exchanges are listed starting on page 70 of the "Success Made Simple" book you should have recieved when you first joined. I think it was free. (?) My JCC also gave me a little one to carry in my purse. It's just called Jenny's Grocery List. Not everything is in here but it's a great guide.
Good luck and congrats on making it to halfway!

Thanks but thats not what I meant. I meant when you look at the nuitrition info in the food you are going to eat when doing a DOMO and you calculate how many starches, fats etc. There is a math formula that you use but my Jcc has not told me the calculations yet. The nutritionist is always doing it on this forum for people. The success guide is great for regular plain foods, but when you have lets say a frozen meal from the grocery store or your own snack etc it's not that easy.

I don't remember where I got the info as I've been a member since, oh say, DIRT! But I have a nifty simple spreadsheet that I use to calculate exchanges. I'd be happy to email it to you (if you have Excel). Feel free to PM me. Here's the info in a nutshell:

Starches: 80 cal, 15 g carbs, 3 g protein, 1 g fat
Meat: 35 cal, 0 g carbs, 7 g protein, 1 g fat
Fruit: 60 cal, 15 g carbs, 0 g protein, 0 g fat
Mlik: 90 cal, 12 g carbs, 8 g protein, 0 g fat (I forget how much calcium, but significant to count as milk)
Veg: 25 cal, 5 g carbs, 2 g protein, 0 g fat
Fat: 45 cal, 0 g carbs, 0 g protein, 5 g fat

I have a row where I enter in the exchanges that I suspect are right and then it calculates the total. I compare that to the totals from the box. For example, the box says 350 cal, 48 g carbs, 21 g protein, 9 g fat. It works out to 3 starches, 2 meats, 1 fat, which calculates out to 355 cal, 45 g carbs, 23 g protein, 10 g fat. Close enough. Depending on what the food is, you would expect there to be more of certain food groups... for example, if there is a very small portion of veggies (ie most frozen dinners), you wouldn't count a full serving. However, if there's a good side of veggies, then count a veggie exchange which allows a few of the calories for that.

Also, the JC exchanges are generally a range, so don't worry too much about rounding or halving the exchanges. Ballparks are good enough.

On the front page of the Community section, there's a button to take a survey about the JC website. I definitely suggested an exchange calculator as a feature that would make our lives easier!! Seems simple enough to do!

You should have received how many of each food group you're supposed to have for your calorie level.

Hope this helps a little. Congrats on halfway!

OMG thank you sooooooooooo much! That is exactly what I was looking for! I also took that survey for JC yesterday and asked them also to make it easier by providing members with the a calculator! That spreadsheet sounds awesome, I will send you PM with my email. I really appreciate your help!

Here's a link from January from the Ask the Dietician section that explains how they do it.
