Hey all

I'm on the 1700 calorie menu and have been doing 30 min work outs 5 times a week. This past week I had done 1 hour 6 times a week, which resulted in a gain. I only gained .5 but, I'm very upset about this, as I worked so hard this week, and was looking forward to an awesome lose. My consultant put the information in the computer today, and with the amount of exercise I have been doing, and now I have been put on 2000 calories, as long as I keep up the same amount of workout. My question is, wont I gain more weight by my calories been increased??? Even before my gain I'm only losing about 1 pound a week, I know that's great, but I know I can lose more as I have in previous years being on Jenny, but I don't seem to be able to this time

If any of those workouts are including weight training, then the "gain" is nothing but your muscles retaining water while they repair themselves. You most certainly did NOT gain fat! Another possibility is that the gain is due to monthly hormonal fluctuations if you are a woman.

If you dont eat the minimal calories your body needs for every day functions, then your body will go into starvation mode. You would not be able to loose fat as your body would hold onto fat stores, and whatever you DO manage to loose would be muscle mass or even organ tissue in order to reduce your calorie needs (since muscle needs more calories to maintain itself than fat does). Once you began to eat normally again, your weight would increase dramatically. You want to avoid dropping your calories too low in order to avoid this, particularly if you are exersizing a lot.

Take care,

I have no idea what your start weight was, how much you've lost, how far you are from goal. I'm assuming, that since you started at 1700, you have a significant amount of weight to lose?

It might take a few weeks to find what calorie level works - where the balance is between calorie intake, calorie burning and "starvation mode".

Not sure what kind of workouts you're doing, but if you've started to do weight training, your muscles will retain water, which may account for a gain. Rest assured, once you build muscle mass, your resting metabolism will increase, and your weight loss will become more evident. In the meantime, until you start seeing more losses on the scale, concentrate on your inches, instead. One thing that I've never liked about JC is that it's all about weight and BMI, and never about body fat percentage..... which, to me, is a much more valuable measurement of good health. Someone can have an acceptable BMI but a too high BFP... just because you don't weigh too much doesn't mean your body composition is healthy.
