Full Version: the new szechuan pork

I had it for the first time last night, and, although I'm thrilled to have a new dinner option, if only temporarily, I thought it was just okay - nothing great. It'll be nice to have a few times before it's gone, but nothing I'll fight to keep as a full time dinner option. It's an easy one to volumize - adding some broccoli, snow peas, sugar snaps would be natural "Asian" inspired additions.

What's everyone else thinking?

I had it last night and enjoyed it. I volumize everything so I defrosted the pork dish in my fridge all day. In a nonstick skillet sprayed with pam I sauteed some sugar snap peas and red bell peppers then added some sliced portobello mushrooms. I added some red chili paste (0 cal), rice wine vinegar (0 cal) and szechuan spicy stir fry sauce (25 cal/Tbl). I broke up some of the pork into smaller pieces and added the dish to the veggie mixture and heated it till cooked through and everything mixed together. I thought it was great and with the addition of the red chili paste it was spicy. I dont know how the dish tasted on its own though.

Scorpio, that sounds good. But, it's almost like you've done so much to the JC meal, that it's not the meal anymore. I guess what I'm saying is if it needs to be that doctored up to be yummy, it's not starting out very good. When I ate mine out of the box, I definitely thought of ways to improve it, but it seems like (at least for me), that it's hardly worth it. With all that effort, might as well make something from scratch, do a MOMO.

This was the first JC meal that I've had that I couldn't finish. The taste was okaybut my pork was fatty and disgusting. I'd chew on it and then get a bite of the fat/gristle. I didn't even know that pork could have gristle. I started to gag (okay, psychological, i know) but I hate fatty meat.

I will never order this one again. Bring back the Spaghetti and Meatballs.

Just had it for dinner. What is the deal with JC rice dishes?? It came out all runny. Taste was ok, but it seemed a little fatty. Also for Szechuan you would think it might be at least a "little" spicy. No dice. It was pretty bland.

On a scale of 1-10 I would give it a 2. Just a hair better than the Sweet and Sour Pork.

Please, fix the rice issue. sad.gif

I tried it last week and yes it's got a little kick to it. Although I typically like spicy dishes, this one was definitely not one of my faves. Doubtful I will get it again.

I'm with Sue. I had the same experience -- I couldn't eat it all.

I guess I'm on my own here. I just tried it for the first time tonight and I really enjoyed it. Just goes to show you all the different tastes that JC has to appeal to. I added fresh red and green bell pepper, onion, and mushrooms. I found it filling and tasty. I love asian food, so I was excited that there is another option. And, I was excited that it was a pork dish. Something different. I'm sad that this won't be permanent. I guess I will have to enjoy it while I can!

I'll have to join Merrimac and say I also enjoyed it. I loved the brown rice and the overall taste of the dish. It's such a nice change from all of the other meals. We haven't had pork so I was happy about that. I'm going to try to volumize it next time. I try not to volumize when I try meals for the first time so i can get an idea of what to volumize it with! This would work really well with lost of cut up assorted peppers stir fried in pam and a little broccoli.

I love th szechuan pork. It's one of my new favorite dishes. I loved the taste of the pork. I didn't find it fatty. I thought it was the perfect consistency. I never had to add anything to my Jenny foods. I pretty much like the flavor of it all. I'm bummed that it's only temporary.

It's one of the few dishes that I have absolutely hated. ohmy.gif The overall flavor was good, the sauce was tasty and I liked the rice, but the taste of the pork was IMO revolting. I dumped some Chinese hot sauce & soy sauce over it and that masked the taste of the pork to an extent. I didn't get any fat or gristle, but "the other white meat" it wasn't rolleyes.gif

I had this for the first time this week also, and I didn't mind it. smile.gif I Volumized it tho with some sauteed mushrooms and sliced Snow peas and a handful of Broccoli.
smile.gif Tasted pretty good to me and I enjoyed the Brown rice as by the end of some weeks? I am pretty well ' pasta'd' out? I feel like I have had a One-on-One with Chef Boyardee some weeks LOL

Had it for the second time last night (I try not to give a final review of a food item, JC or otherwise, until at least two tries). This time I volumized - add lots of veggies. And, I added some bottle Chinese hot sauce, to give it a little (more) zing. Still disappointing. This is a temporary that I, at least, won't miss. There seemed to be more pork in this tray than the last one, but a few pieces were pure gristle - nasty. I'm not a picky eater, and will eat pretty much anything, as long as it doesn't have mushrooms. If this dish was all there was to eat, I'd eat it. But, with so many other options, I'll skip it for now on.

I thought it was absolutely disgusting. I couldn't finish it. I don't even think volumizing or doctoring this meal up could help. YECKKKKKKKK!

Hahaha sorry I just really disliked it.

i was scared after all the bad reviews, but ate it for my dinner last night. I was quite happy with the meal. I ate it as boxed. It is not spicy; I love hot foods. It has a bit of a zing. The pork....to clarify, seems to be pork tenderloin which is a dark pork. It is not the same pork in a pork chop. I love pork tenderloin since it is more moist (probably has a bit more fat as chicken thighs do) and flavorful. So I actually liked this dish enough to order it weekly until it is discontinued. I'd probably even stash a few at the end. I'm so new that I haven't started volumizing yet. I get the concept but haven't figured out the sauce part yet. I'd rather have less food than have to eat dry food added with no sauce on it. I'll learn, I suppose. I'm trying to get used to eating less food at the moment.

So.....I would consider adding some water chestnuts or a few snap peas and maybe some more heat. Don't expect center cut pork chop meat, because it isn't. But.....I give it a B. Besides, I LOVE pork and brown rice. I finished every morsel.

Hope that helps.

you can add sauces, most are free... i like spicy foods too, hot sauces are free.

I like it! I'll purchase ONE of any new JC item, and taste it for myself. Everyone's opinions vary so widely. So it's worth testing for a shot at more variety!

I found it EZ to spice up if you're into spicier stuff, and super EZ to volumize with veggies, peppers, onions, etc. whatever. It was spicy enough for me without adding anything. I ordered 2 last week, knowing it's a limited available item, I can eat later on another week when I want something a little different.
