Calling all 60+
I think that the 60+ group gets lost in the 50+ group - let's start looking for each other and post here.

I know that you are out there and need support as much as I do and also have wisdom to share from making it to the 60+ forever young time of your life.
I have a question - What is your motivation/or goals to loose weight this month?
I will share mine -
July goals
Pamper myself by taking care of my:
Water.
Excercise (Water Aerobics & walking at the gym)
Journal my food intake.
Stay focused in JC program.
Clearing out old tired habits that get in the way of the new me and the life I have choosen.
Cheerio
GrannyW
I'm 62 and was glad to find a group I can relate to. Goals this month...
More water
Move more (new knee, but trying to walk more)
Start new job, but stay on plan
Lose a little each weigh-in

ShinyPearl
Hey Granny
Let's do it together. Great goals - keep on moving!
luvmygrannies
hi over 60 ladies.
we are going to rock...
you guys keep me going...im 68 and have to lose 150 lb...1 day at a time...i want to stop obsessing about food...finally doing this for me...taking care of me...dh and son taking care of their own food...so that made it whole lot easier...jc does mine...love it
GrannyW
I know we're not supposed to beat ourself up when we mess up, but I feel like I need to confess. I've been doing so well and this is the first time since I started that I went off the plan. Tonight I went to July 4 celebration and you know how it is... every festivity it all about food. I took my own snack, but wound up eating a sausage with peppers and onions sandwich and a whole pint of Hershey's butter pecan ice cream (my favorite). I hate that I'm so weak. Guess I should have called someone on the Jenny toll free number to help me through it. I'm going to put that number on my cell phone. Okay... that's off my chest (and I hope not on my thighs) and I'm starting new again tomorrow. Stay strong ladies and I'll try to also.

GrannyW
Hey, I wanted to share my favorite ingredients soup with you. I keep it on hand all the time. The first week, I went through 3 pots, but now about one a week. It's really a good filler and you can have as much as you want anytime you want. Add to or replace these ingredients with any you like and enjoy.
2 large cans of peeled plum tomatoes (chopped)
2 cans or more of water
1 cup V8
1 lb carrots sliced
6 (2 lb) turnips cubed (good substitute for potatoes)
1/2 head of cabbage (chopped)
Pepper to taste
1 tablespoon Splenda
1 or 2 tablespoons beef "base" (not bouillon)
Cook all day, taste and add more water if needed.

Hi there, of course, you all have heard that "60" is the "new" 40!!!??? Actually, with the health improvements I already feel on JC, I do feel better than I did at 40 or 50 - especially with all the annoying PMS, etc., issues overwith! LOL!
My Goal: Exercise on recumbant bike, since I can't walk for a while (chiropractic issues). I have not done well with this so far........
Great idea to start this thread!
ShinyPearl
Wow! I new we were out there - thanks for posting - GrannyW, Luvmygrannies, DixieP!
I think we are going to be good for each other.
You know the fourth of July really challenged me this year. I ate, enjoyed but got gas.... So recommitting and getting back on JC fast because in two days I feel like I undid the previous four days since my WI. Focusing on me is pampering me. (My old mode of operation was me last, by the time I got to me I was too tired to give a hoot.) So back to my goal of pampering myself by drinking water, eating correctly and finding/making the time to move.)
How is your weekend going?
Stay strong. I'll check in over the weekend to get your support
Dixie P
I also veered off program for the 4th, but nothing like I used to eat before JC! Also, I have given in to my peanut butter cravings too much lately (add it to a banana smoothie) So I am up a few onces, which WILL be off before my weigh in on Tues! (Also not exercising much this week - lazy).
I weigh myself each am, as an analytical experiment, so I can track what I am doing/not doing. I find, that weight does fluctuate lb or oz daily, even if stictly on program.
Have a good weekend everyone!

So glad to find a 60's group out there. The 60's ...we were in high school and college then. Omilord!
I'm 62 and back on JC after taking a 9 year "vacation." Of course, I gained back almost 40 pounds over those 9 years :-( Let me tell you, when you only gain back about 1/2 pound a month, it is sooooooooooo easy to just ignore it. I ifnored the 5 pound and the 10 pound mark ...and then somehow "overnight" it was over the 35 pound mark.
So, here I am back again, doing JC like my life depends on it, because it literally does! My cholesterol was up to 235 before I started on medication and now my blood pressure is creeping up into the 145/80 range. Too high!
I'm a slow loser (only 2.4 pounds my first week), but even if I only lose a pound a week, I'll be happy. I already feel better.
So glad to have found all of you other "grannies!." I look forward to hearing more about your successes.
GrannyW
Well, I've been looking on here, but haven't had the heart to write anything lately. I don't know what's up... just feel kind of down in the dumps. Ever since Saturday (this is Tuesday) I've felt hungry all the time, especially in the evenings. Haven't had any really "bad" things (except a bowl of chili one evening) to eat, but have had some extra items (popcorn, yogurt, etc.) most evenings and can't seem to stop myself. My stomach feels like it's full of acid and the only way I can calm it is to eat something. I'm afraid I'll be up on weigh-in day this coming Sunday. Guess I could use a pep talk.

I think that's pretty normal any time you cut back on the carbs. I'm no scientist, but what is it they say about Seratonin and such ...when you eat carbs, your body produces Seratonin and that's the body's "feel good" chemical.
Have you tried a bit of exercise when you're feeling down? Apparently the same chemical is released with vigorous exercise; you know, "runner's high" and all that stuff LOL I sure don't think you need to run, but maybe a nice walk would help. Take a walk; feel the breeze, listen to the birds, etc. Breathe deeply and see if the walk and the relaxation after don't chase those blues away a bit.

Don't beat yourself up over a couple of little slips in the program ...but my guess is that acidy stomach might have been caused by some of the "slip ups." Did you try chewing a couple of Tums or something like that instead of putting more food on top of the acidy stomach?
So far I haven't had any problems with acid (this time around), but I remember when I was on Jenny years ago, any time I ate anything that was the least bit greasy, I got the acid stomach. I actually think that's what kept me "legal" for so long; I just couldn't deal with the upset stomach. (Of course, I seem to have gotten over that hump VERY well after a while ...else I wouldn't be back on JC trying to lose the same 40 pounds all over again!).
Anyway, just hang in there! ...and, if you do gain when you weigh in, just take it as an incentive to NOT add those little extras that might be causing the acid problem.
...and as an aside, I find that yogurt will give me an acidy stomach a lot faster than just plain old skim milk. So if you're eating yogurt, maybe that's the culprit.

Welcome, Gloria. Yes, health reasons were really the "kick in the butt" that I needed to join JC! I am beginning week 10 and my blood pressure has not be this low in years, I noticed an improvemet with the BP in week 2! My blood sugar and cholestrol were up there also.
I started walking right after the doctor visit at the end of April, lost 5 lbs just from that, and then joined JC 2 weeks after that on 5/11. So, I am really almost 20 lbs lost counting that initial 5 lbs
Granny, I was in the dumps last week, but told my JC counselor about it. I am under chiropractor care and haven't been able to walk 2-3 miles/day like I was doing - so I a sure the "endorphine thing" defnitely has something to do with it. I feel happier this week, as I am finally getting some relief from back pain! Still not getting on my recmbant bike, however.
I lost another pound this past week, and that was with going off JC for 4th July, and a couple other meals on my own (I do try to be really good when I do this) I did have too much pnut butter in my smoothie a couple of times......
Glad you all are here! Oh, on my "nekked in the morning" persoal weigh in, I am in the "170's!!!!!" Yeah!
ShinyPearl
So good to read your posts - you are all the real velveteen rabbits (ever read that book as a child or to your grandchild/ren?) of JC. Being honest on our "down" days and sharing where we are is what is going to help us all through to our goal. None of us are perfect and none of us really want to be carrying around all this extra "luggage." I think that carrying around the extra weight does have a significant effect on how we are feeling. We all are survivors or each would not be here - ssssssssssssssssssssso, lets move in the direction that we want to go. Yes, I stubbed my toe (ate some Dots tonight) on my journey today and I am going to go journal that and move on. (Talk about acid, I too feel so much better on program, and as I learn more about associating what I just ate and the effect on my constitution the less acid and gas I have. So why did I just eat a bunch of Dots? I do not know but I am going to figure out what I can replace that "small term satisfaction" with. Suggestons welcome.
Honest and positive is what is going to get me there. How about you?
Cheerio for tonight

Would anyone be interested in forming our own little "off boards" e-mail group for us 60+ folks?
If interested, we could set up our own e-mail support group so the messages would come directly to our mailboxes instead of having to log onto the JC site.
If interested, send me your e-mail address. I'll collect them for a week or so and then send out a "Welcome" message to everyone ...and depending on how many people join the circle, we can either decide to make it a "closed" circle or we can leave it "open" and invite more people to join until we reach a good number.
I belong to another e-mail circle (not JC or diet related) that's been going on over 10 years now and it seems that 16 to 20 people work great. Once you get more, it becomes unwieldy and you don't really get to know people ...but when it gets down to 10 or fewer, there really isn't enough e-mail "traffic" for the support you need.
So, if you're interested, send a little note to ggkons@gmail.com and we'll see if we can get something going here.
GrannyW
I don't know about others, but I like the message board where you can look back easily at the messages and see everyone's progress. Email groups tend to become cliquey and eventually start leaving some people out.
Dixie P
Gloria, I sent you a private message w/my new email addy - very interested!

Hi ladies, I am 63 and have been on Jenny off and on for about 2 years. I started out at 176 and got to 152 and then gained back to 167. I have been back for about 3 months now and am back to 158 with a new goal of 155. I was just wondering if any of you have been doing any weight workouts. I started using some hand weights about a month ago. I have progessed from 3 to 5 lb dumbells to 10+ for most of my arm exercises. It is so important at our age to keep our bones strong and not lose muscle while dieting. I usually do walking one day and strength the next and it has really made a difference. I have been checking out the burn fat feed muscle website and in the faq section they have info for seniors doing strength work. I have not bought the info nor am I affiliated with them but the guy seems to make a lot of sense. Don't be intimidated by the bodybuilder look. He pretty much says eat several small meals kinda like the Jenny plan, small portions several times a day.
Just something to encourage everyone and to let you know it is never to late to strengthen your body.

I received your private mail, but I couldn't respond ...said you weren't accepting private messages.
Anyway, you are the only one who responded, so I don't think it will fly at this time. maybe we can try again sometime later.
Dixie P
Sorry about that, and sorry it won't work out at this time. I'll change my profile for future.....didn't realize!

Hello Granny W., Luvmygrannies, Dixie P., Konslerg, Susan N.
Good to read your posts.
Had my WI this afternoon and I am up 2.2 pounds and I do not like it at all. So back to plan A and I am going to really try to stick to the program tomorrow and the next day..... I am not going to beat myself up yet I can see that I was putting other choices before my weight loss one. Back on track tonight.
I am going to journal and have free food ready to eat. Might even make your soup Granny W.
How are you all doing?
I like to see the group on the board and I am impressed that there are 6 of us. You are keeping me coming back. I have never heard of a private email group, (don't laugh at me) while I am not opposed to something I know nothing about it sounds like we are still so new and small. I am going to ask the Webmaster if we can have our own support buddy group and not have to scrounge around and find ourselves in the 50's group. I know it says 50+, but honestly I feel that our needs are different.
I am very interested in becoming more structured in my excercise area. Lifting weights, working out at the gym, water aerobics and walking are what I visualize myself doing. The consultant and I saw from my journaling the past week where I headed off. I was not structuring my afternoon and evenings as well as my mornings into the afternoon. I laughed and said I know what you mean I have to discipline myself. Did not feel right and I could feel the old walls of disciplining myself and deprivation staring me in the face and she told me that discipline is really not the word. It is too harsh and structuring seems to be more inviting a word and invites me to think about excercising more frequently then I have the past couple of weeks. And structure my calendar so that I accomplish what I need to do to be successful.
Well, I have rattled on - I am tired of being tired. I am going to do it even if I am tired.
Let's dig outselves out together. I care about you.
GrannyW
Pearl, glad you're not letting 2 lbs get you down. Could just have been temporary water-weight gain. I'll try to remember how you handled it if I'm up when I go Sunday for my weigh-in. I think that it would be great to have our own group. I've had trouble finding us sometimes. Right now, I have set this page as my home page so that when I open the internet, it goes straight to our postings.

Free Soup
2 large can of peeled plum tomatoes (chopped)
2 cans of water
1 cup V8 (optional)
1 lb carrots (sliced)
1 lb turnips cubed (good substitute for potatoes)
1/2 head cabbage (chopped)
1 can okra (if canned, put in about half way through cooking process)
1 or 2 tablespoons beef "base" (not bouillon)
1 tablespoon Splenda
Pepper to taste
Cook all day (or for 12 or more ours in crock pot)
Taste and add more water if needed
GrannyW
This is my favorite message board group, but I have one that I set up in June that I try to stop by too. if you ever want to visit, go to "Jenny Craig Message Board" then "Welcome" then "Returning Clients" then "Anyone else return around June 15?". It's grown bigger than I expected it to, so it's hard to keep track of who's who on it.
Dixie P
Hi, nothing much new, BUT, I am finally responding to treatment at chiropractor and will be walking for my execise again soon. Also, I will be having supervised therapy/exercise to strengthen my back.
I know the lack of exercise has caused me to feel a little down, even though I continue to lose a little each week.
I love the idea of a "60's & over" group! We do have different issues AND lose weight a lot slower than the 50's and below!
NanakateWest
Hi I'm 63 and would love to join your group. You talk about issues and concerns we "older" women experience.
I am retired on disability and spend a lot of time on my computer. My JC consultant has recommended I check the message boards and find others to share this experience.
Doesn't look like you are a closed group, but let me know if I can join. I also support having a 60+ message category
GrannyW
Welcome NanakateWest! The more support, ideas and friends, the better; and we'll be here for you when you need us too.
Dixie P
Welcome Kathryn!
We are here for you!

Hello There; I'd like to join in on the over 60's group. Just returned to jc last monday. I got to get a little more experience using this message board though.
Welcome any guidance to navigate this site.
GrannyW
Welcome Soup!
ShinyPearl
Welcome NakakateWest and Soup!!!
Re our own 60+ message area under support buddies.... I did contact the Webmaster but have not gotten a reply. My luck would be that I am asking in the wrong place. I will give it a couple of days and if I do not hear back I will call the company.
So far today I have stayed on goal. Even went to Water Aerobics this morning. I am going to figure out the times I am going to excercise this week, aday at a time and then look at the week as a whole. I could organize the best schedule ever but when it comes time to go do the excercise I don't feel like doing it or I am too tired. It is hard for me, yet I have to make the weight loss/excercise a higher priority then the wait and see how I feel mode of operation I have gotten into the past while. AND I don't want to excercise when I am tired... So KISS (Keep It Simple Sister) and plan to excercise when I am not tired. Brilliant - So simple.... I will keep you posted on how I do. How are each of you doing with your excercise 60's style?
Dixie P
And a Welcome to Soup! We are growing in numbers!
I did 20 min on the recumbant on Thurs. night, but not last night. My problem right now is that I am really sore from my back treatment. So, hopefully I will be winding down on the treatments and back to not being so sore, etc.! (Of course, any excuse, huh?)
GrannyW
Hi everyone... how're you doing? Well, went to weigh in this morning. Lost 1.2 lb, which was a surprise because it had been 10 days and I was not very strict some days. Would probably have been more if I'd behaved, but I've lost 15.2 lbs in a month, so I'll take every little bit I can and be happy. Going back in one week this time instead of waiting 10 days... I think that will help keep me motivated better.

NanakateWest
Thank you, everyone, for the welcome
The only truly safe form of exercise I can enjoy is getting into the swimming pool--either with my grandkids or by taking the arthritis class at the YMCA. My right side is not stable or reliable and I don't get hurt when in the water I have Post Polio Syndrome so the right side of my body's neurological system is breaking down in those areas affected by the polio.
I am blessed to live in a retirement park where we have a beautiful swimming pool and spa, outdoors but heated. I have been going at least twice a week, once with my grandkids on Tuesdays. I need to go every other day when the weather allows. I always feel and sleep better. Summer is my least favorite season of the year because of the heat and strong sun exposure. My very favorite season is Fall and I always feel rejuvenated in Setember & October, much like most people feel in the Spring.
I read a lot in the summer, watch movies or TV series on DVD, work on my scrapbooks and make cards for my friends. Just finished rereading Harry Potter's "Order of the Phoenix", have started the "Half Blood Prince" and am looking forward to Book 7 being delivered next Saturday. Haven't seen the new movie yet. Have any of you? Am I the only "Harry Potter Nut"? I bought the first book to give my grandson, got hooked and now we enjoy talking about the books together. My mother believed that books were living things that needed to be passed around and not left to "die" on book shelves. I had many of the original Nancy Drew mysteries when I was growing up and still am enthralled by mysteries, particularly those with women as the main character. In my family, I am known as "the book Nana".
Didn't mean to rattle on so long! I promised my JC consultant that I would connect with the support groups on these message boards this week. I am returning to JC after a series of medical setbacks and I was very successful in the past when I communicated with people like myself on these boards.
Take good care of yourselves because you deserve nothing less
Dixie P
I am a mystery book nut, but have never gotten into the HP books (yet!), I even bought a few of the first ones.....now that I am retired, maybe I finally will read them?
I have been thinking about joining the gym near me for the water classes......hmmmmm....maybe I should. I belong to Curves and was going there 3-times/week or more (I could walk from my house). Then this back stuff started and I am lucky to make it to Curves 2 times /week!! I am also excited that the Chiropractor has a weight/exercise machine room, and will be instructing me on back strengthening exercises in a week or so.
My sister is a polio survivor (and 20+ year breast cancer survivor).
NanakateWest
I am trying to get my TickerFactory graph set up. Looks like fun. This is a test to see if I have done it correctly
NanakateWest
Hi, Dixie
Water supports your body and allows you to move slowly and carefully, working out by the water resistance. Go for it!! I would think your chiropractor would agree.
How old is your sister? There is a large population of polio survivors that are reaching their 60s. Drs are struggling to catch up with the post polio issues. I have a friend here in the park, a polio survivor, who has found a doctor that has decided to hire an intern to specialize in these issues. My right side and throat were paralyzed so I have a problem with choking--particularly when I try to breath, talk and swallow all at the same time
I wear a brace on my right leg and use a walker now when I go out in public. Falls had become more frequent and painful as I was hitting my head first, knocking out teeth, etc. Have only had a couple of slight falls since and am always careful to have something to reach out and touch for stability.
Thanks for listening. I was thinking about unhealthy food choices before I logged in here with you. I know support of others is essential to success, not to mention a great way to "meet" others having the same battles.
GrannyW
Hi NanaKate... you have to paste the url for your weight ticker after the text of each message to get it to work... at least I do. I keep a copy of the updated url info in a document on my desktop so I can easlily copy and paste it each time. Hope this helps.

GrannyW
Hey, someone on my message board string told us about something I wanted to share with you all. Go to website http://www.dwlz.com/restaurants.html and scroll down to the HTML files of 559 restaurants (about any restaurant you ever heard of) and you can look at any restaurant’s menu with nutritional values shown. You can download it to your PC and/or Palm Pilot. So when you’re going somewhere you can choose something ‘smart’ to eat ahead of time. For example… I love the Quesadilla Explosion at Chili’s and never imagined it had 850 calories w/o the dressing.

Dixie P
Kathryn, I sent you a private email.....
Oh my, tonight's a challenge for me......I am going to have a bbq steak and cut the portion I eat to the appropriate "deck of cards" size!!! Wish me luck!
Dixie P
I just put this thread on my desktop as a shortcut - cool!

Today is week 2 weigh in. Wish me luck folks! I also have a gyn appointment and a dermatologist appointment. Can you tell what I do on my days off? LOL
NanakateWest
Thank you, Granny and Dixie for the suggestions. I'm running late for a meeting this morning so will use your instructions later this afternoon and let you know how it works.
Have a great day everyone and remember to take care of yourself. Take a walk early before it gets too hot. I swam for an hour yesterday and slept like a baby. Hope to do the same today. My daughter and grandkids come tomorrow for fun in the pool

Well, I just got back from Week 2 check in and I lost another 2.2 pounds. That's 4.6 these first two weeks. Now, if I could just keep losing at this pace I'd really be happy LOL, but that's probably NOT going to happen for sure.
Even better, I had my annual gyn check up and my blood pressure is down to 120/70, down from 145/80 back in May. I am a happy camper.
Dixie P
Great Blood Pressure! I also noticed immediate and dramatic change in my BP just from walking and being on JC!
Dixie P
OUR NEW GROUP IS ON THE BOARD!!!! Yeah, ShinyPearl! Just wanted to make sure no one missed it!!!! Excited!
ShinyPearl
How exciting! a place we can call our own and more importantly we can find each other.
Thank you WebMaster and the council who took the suggestion under advisment and thought that it was a good idea. Done! and I appreciate your caring!
Hip Hip Hooray!
NanakateWest
Way to go, ShinyPearl Thanks for pursuing our request with the JC Webmaster.
Gloria, congrats on the weight loss and even more so for the reduced blood pressure
