I'm a vegetarian and wondering if the pesto pizza is an option for me? I don't see a carrot symbol next to it but I'm wondering what's in it that makes it non-veg? thanks

I'm not sure the answer to your question, but if no one can answer it in this section I'm sure if you post it on the "Ask the Dietitian" section she/he will know the answer. They moniter that board m-f but if you post it soon you'll get an answer Monday. Good luck and I look forward to seeing why it's no carrot!

I am on the veggie plan and have wondered the same thing. I have found that the pesto pizza (as well as other items with no carrot or no meat mentioned) contain renet. Renet is an animal enzyme that is used in the cheese making process. I hope this helps.

Why is the Pesto Pizza not considered a vegetarian food? What ingredient(s) keep the non meat food out of the vegetarian list?

Thank you for your question,
Pesto Pizza is a meatless entree but it is not a vegan entree. It contains dairy products so would not be appropriate for someone that avoids all animal products.
Best Wishes.

The dietian bounced around the question. Said it wasnt non-vegan, the truth is it contains rennet - which is an animal by product, used in the process of making cheese. So it is not only not Vegan, its not vegitarian as well. Same thing with the cheese in the cheesy enchalada (animal by product), anytime peanut butter bar (gelatin/honey) , mac n cheese (animal by product), multiplus (gelatin), protect (gelatin), and spinach and cheese tortellini (rennet).

Um...yeah. The question wasn't "Is it vegan" considering cheese isn't anywhere near vegan. It was why isn't it vegetarian. And the so-called "dietitians" answer was irrelevant. Cheese does not make something nonvegetarian, considering microbial rennet is always an option. Apparently you don't have to have an education to be a JC "dietitian". They could have just blatantly said something to the effect of "because instead of plant-based enzymes, we choose to scrape the inside of animal stomachs to add to the cheese. That is why it's not vegetarian." or "Instead of vegetable broth, we find the use of melted chicken parts to be more satisfying in the flavor department." Ah well. At least they don't try to pass it off as veg. They could at least not dance around when someone asks a valid question.

There are vegan cheeses out there made from tofu isnt there? Hmm no idea - but I thought so.. but thinking about how they make cheese... I guess they could make it with soy milk or something... I went to Tillamook Cheese Factory not to long ago - fascinating place... Anyway. I dont know - I could be wrong. It has happened MANY times before and Im sure it will happen many times again.
