Full Version: Can we do soy milk??

Hello, I just started JC last week and I think I've developed a milk allergy since I stopped drinking milk about 8 years ago. The meatless plan requires a lot of milk!!
Does anyone know if we can switch to soy milk? Is it considered an extra fat or anything? Any advice is appreciated!!

Ask your question to the message board dietitian. You will get the correct answers.
Look on pg 64 of your "Success Made Simple" guide to see that you can have fat-free milk, soy milk, buttermilk, or fat-free yogurt.
On pg 12 in the "Success Manual" part one, it states that you can have lactose reduced nonfat milk, 2 egg whts, 1/2 C tofu, 1 oz lowfat skim-milk cheese (like string mozzarella or 2 Tbl Parm cheese), and of course your anytime bar is a milk as well.
I do not know about fat-free cottage cheese; however, I sometimes have it as a dip with a few crackers for (one starch and one milk serving).
I hope this helps. I love asking the dietitian questions, I think it is a great resource. Not to mention this board; I have received so many tasty ideas from others by reading their posts!

I've been on the program since Feb 4, almost 3 months now. I've lost 19 lbs so far. I have 11 more to go to hit goal.
The program works! As far as the reading material we are given; it is wonderful info! Good luck to you, JC friend!

Hi PB, You are doing great. You should be on maintainance soon. Are you following the veg menu? How do you feel on it long term? It's better than I thought it would be taste wise, I'm just worried about nutritionally. I did switch to light soy milk and I feel better.

soy milk is a good substitute, but they recommend you also take a calcium suppliment just to be sure you get your basic needs met

No, I am not a vegetarian. I simply like vegetarian food. I prefer whole grains, beans, lentils, tofu, nuts, seeds, veggies, berries, and fruit. I also love fish, sushi is a fav. I eat some chicken too. Occasionally, I will have a lean red meat.
Deej is right re getting enough calcium. I also take vitamin supplements as well as the JC anytime bar. I personally take a multi, Calcium, vitamin B complete (includes foliate and the B vit's), fish oil (Omega 3), and ginkgo (herb for energy and brain). I also drink a lot of herb teas, like green tea. On the vegetarian diet, it is a must to ensure you get all the nutrition your body needs. Calcium, vit D, foliate (folic acid) as well as protein.
I feel great on the program, however, I do a great portion of my meals on my own. IE: So I can have foods like brown rice and fish.
The program works because education comes with it. Portion size is a big one! I wish you well! Enjoy your new body!

I can recomend a soy milk that I love - Contenental - low carb (8 carb) - I usually have chocolate soy milk. It has added calcium in it too.

Hi Bikki, I just tried 8 Continents light vanilla soy milk and it's great! Is that the one you were talking about? The dairy milk was making me sneeze and my eyes were watering all the time. Since I switched,I haven't had any problems. Milk based yogurt seems to be okay though. Go figure. Thanks for the advice!

Ummm maybe thats it lol. I thought it was contenetal.. All I remember is the chocolate soy milk is good, it has 8 carbs (not that I really care about carbs) and I believe its 80-90 cals per serving. Its shaped in a funky hour glass tub thingy. I like it better then silk. I have it at home... But Im not at home now If it is the same one glad I could help!
