Full Version: Pain when exercising

I had a question and wondered if anyone else experienced the same thing. I began exercising on my treadmill tonight and my shins began to hurt as soon as I started walking faster. I always walk this same pace and have never had this happen. It actually happened on Tuesday also. I only walked for 20 minutes instead of 30 and not sure if I am doing something wrong. Thanks.

Something like you describe can happen for a number of reasons. If it continues the next time you jump on the treadmill, check with your doctor to make sure everything is OK.
A couple things that might be the cause:
1. Not having well stretched Achilles' tendons can cause the muscles in the front of your shins to ache,
2. Having flat feet and exercising without proper arch support can cause this type of pain also. Supportive shoes and/or orthotics can help,
3. Stress fractures in your tibia can be a cuase of shin pain.
With so many muscles and tendons, plus the complexity of the joints in your foot, ankle, and knee it's best to have it checked out so you don't become injured and miss out the oppurtunity to work out!
BTW, if you're thinking 'shin splints,' there's no such thing, it's just a layman's term for any tendonitis, stress fracture, sprain, etc that causes shin pain.

Thanks so much. I am going to try tonight again and see what happens. I guess I will try stretching better. Have a great day.

A very good answer above. I had exactly the same happening to me 2 years ago when I started to walk long distances. I had a very bad pain in theshin/soles of the feet after about 30 minutes of brisk walking. I thought my shoes were not fitting properly. I bought 3 new pair and problem still persisted. Than totally accidentally I was going to make orthotics to my son and doctor said something like - if this problem is not treated while he is a child he might have problems running later. When he described the problem and told me that it is hereditary, I asked him to check my feet - and yes, my son inherited it from me! First I did not beleive, but I have extended insurance and got custom made orthotics - imagine my surprize when I could run for an hour using orthotics! Now I have 2 pairs - one in my running shoes and one in every day shoes, and I love them. In summer I can not use them and I feel it right away as my feet start to hurt again.
I am glad my son can get it fized with only 2 years of orthotics, and he actually loves them.

If you don't have any physical problems as mentioned above, you could just need to build up the strength in your shins. One way to do this is with toe pulls. Sit on the floor with both legs stretch out in front of you. Place the heel of your right foot against the toes of your left. P-u-l-l your left toes up as far toward you as you can, while pushing with your right heel to provide resistance. Then, p-u-s-h with your right heel to point your left foot, while resisting. Do 12-15 of these, then switch feet.

Thanks you guys!! I don't think I have any of those problems, it only hurts on the treadmill. I have never noticed it any other time. I will be sure to do the exercise you suggested funniegirl.
