Weight Loss Still Tops the List!
LA JOLLA, Calif., January 2, 2001 - Despite the dawn of a new millennium, New Year's resolutions for many Americans still have a decidedly traditional slant. With an estimated 61% of Americans overweight or obese, losing weight tops the list.
But how to make your weight loss resolution actually work in 2001? Among the time-tested techniques for helping clients succeed at weight loss resolutions:
- Set a realistic goal and break it into smaller steps to keep track of your progress - a mere 10% decrease in your weight can make all the difference in your well-being.
- Fuel motivation with imagination. Visualize all the personal benefits - besides weight loss - that your positive changes will bring.
- Tune in to your physical and emotional eating cues by keeping a journal. The moment you spend writing about a food enables you to choose to eat it ... or not!
- Plan to be more physically active every day: walk the dog, take the stairs, schedule 30-minute blocks in your day planner. Make activity your first choice for stress release.
- Surround yourself with people who support your goals. Enlist a walking buddy, or consider joining a structured weight loss program.
- Affirm and reward your efforts. Trade criticism of the past for strong, positive statements and treat yourself to a movie, a manicure, a good book, as you reach a milestone.
